PURPOSE:To obtain the titled filaments having improved mechanical and heat resistance characteristics, by containing a specific chain organic compound in an aqueous liquid material containing basic aluminum chloride.colloidal silica and organic binder. CONSTITUTION:A water-soluble and neutral chain organic compound, constituted of carbon-hydrogen and oxygen and having two hydroxyl groups in one molecule, e.g. ethylene glycol, alpha-propylene glycol, etc., is added to an aqueous liquid material containing basic aluminum chloride.colloidal silica and organic binder and the resultant blend can be spun and fired while heating to afford the aimed alumina filaments having sufficient mechanical strength and heat resistance and small macropore volume.
