PURPOSE:To avoid deterioration in the picture quality despite the wear of a magnetic head by using a recording current control means which controls the amount of recording current supplied to a magnetic head to an optimum level. CONSTITUTION:A microcomputer 34 stores previously the optimum recording current value of a VTR production mode into a memory and at the same time calculates the recording current value. Then the computer 34 detects the wear degree of a magnetic head from said recording current value and then detects the optimum recording current then. In other words, the computer 34 calculates the recording current value IH from the input data given from an A/D converting circuit 32 to compare the value IH with the optimum recording current value IHMAX and outputs the 3-bit control signal F to a variable resistance circuit 38 so as to eliminate the difference between both values IH and IHMAX.
