PURPOSE:To increase the limit speed of coating by replacing air entrained in a web with a gas having high solubility in a coating liquid just prior to coating. CONSTITUTION:A replacing chamber 18 for bringing the coating liquid into collision in the form of a liquid film againt a continuously traveling belt-like base to form a coating film 14 and replacing the entrained air with the gas having the high solubility in the coating liquid is disposed near a dynamic contact point 17 for coating in the stage of coating various kinds of liquid compsn. to the above-mentioned base to produce a photographic film, photographic paper, etc. The air entrained in the web 15 is replaced with the gas such as chlorine or sulfur dioxide having the high solubility in the coating liquid is just prior to the coating. The generation of a coating trouble by the intrusion of the entrained air is prevented and therefore the limit speed of coating is increased. The increase of drying load by the dilution of the liquid and the decrease of quality by condensation are thus suppressed.
