High strength and modulus polyethylene objects are prepared by polymerizing ethylene in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a catalyst system to form a 1-30 wt.% solution of linear polyethylene with an Mw of 4 x 10<5> to 5 x 10<6>, converting this solution into a solvent-containing object (fiber, tape, film), cooling this object to form a gel object and subjecting this latter to a stretching at high temperature. Preferably a Ti/V/Al/Halogen-catalyst system is used. Advantage: Solution-making step is superfluous.
