A closed circuit breathing apparatus comprises a compartment which may be charged with a coolant, e.g. water or ice, and means for affording a slow escape of coolant and distributing same over at least the part of the apparatus containing the breathing bag, whereby the inhaled air comprising recirculating air is cooled. The invention may be illustrated with reference to Fig. 1 wherein oxygen from cylinder 7 and recirculating air from carbon dioxide absorbent 5 pass into compartment 2 containing inside-out breathing bag 3. Said compartment 2 is covered with a coating 25, which may be of textile fabric or cellular sheet material, and water from melting ice 22 contained in compartment 19, drips thereon from restricted outlets 23 via tubes 24. |
