<p>A helicopter flight director for directing the pilot to achieve optimum (maximum) turn rates to a demanded attitude with minimum work load monitors attitude and motion (turn rate and direction) about all helicopter control axes and determines optimum motion about each axis and any error between optimum and monitored motion. Errors for each of the three axes are displayed on a CRT 34 (Figs. 3(a) and 3(b)) by displacing a director symbol 39 from superimposed and visually distinctive alignment with a reference symbol graticule 38. The director symbol is viewable in the foveal vision of the pilot and its relationship with the reference symbol perceived by peripheral vision. Each reference symbol axis corresponds to a helicopter axis about which attitude motion is effected by manipulation of flight control devices and the disposition of display symbols directs the pilot as to the direction of further operation of the appropriate control until symbol alignment indicates all control devices are properly set. The pilot gets all the directions for more than one axis in a simple form from a single symbol without any eye scanning. Symbol displacement indicates only the sense of control operations not magnitude and so relationship between symbol size, displacement and display size can be chosen at will. <IMAGE></p> |
