In a device for the transfer and metering of thermal energy between a supply main and a consumer system, thermal contact between fluids flowing in supply and receiver ducts is effected by means of one or more thermosiphons (30), each containing a working fluid in contact with its vapour, and each having a condenser area (34) in the receiver duct, and an evaporator area (35) in the supply duct. Liquid condensate returns from the condenser area to the evaporator area through a liquid passage (42) which contains a flowrate meter (46) providing a pulsed output in which each pulse represents a quantum of fluid flow therethrough. The pulses are received by a counting and display device (48) calibrated to provide a direct reading of the quantity of thermal energy supplied. Each thermosiphon can have a plurality of separate condenser areas (34) and a plurality of separate evaporator areas (35) arrayed respectively across the receiver and supply ducts. Alternatively the supply duct and/or the receiver duct can be split into a plurality of distinct portions which pass through the thermosiphon vessel to effect heat exchange therewith in the manner of a shell and tube boiler or a plate evaporator. Two or more independent thermosiphons can be provided with their evaporator areas disposed successively along the supply duct and their condenser areas disposed successivily along the receiver duct. Similar arrangements can be provided for metering consumption of refrigerant. |
