PURPOSE:To automatically determine chuck pawls having a shape corresponding to the shape of a workpiece, by moving a cursor to a chucking point along the shape of the workpiece displayed on the screen of a CRT on an NC lathe before a setting key is operated. CONSTITUTION:When a cursor is moved to a predetermined position along the external shape of a workpiece displayed on the screen of a CRT display device 1, and a setting key is then manipulated, the position is inputted and designated as a chucking point. An input control section 3 reads the coordinate values of the chucking point inputted through a key-board 2 to display on the CRT display device 1, and delivers a signal to a chucking point designating section 4 which determines and stores in a memory the designated coordinate values of the chucking point and delivers the coordinate values to a chucking point pawl determining section 5. The chucking pawl determining section 5 determines predetermined chuck pawls in accordance with the workpiece shape and the chucking point, and the data thereof is stored in a chucking data memory section 6.
