PURPOSE:To remove chlorides from a spongy active metal in high efficiency by blending a chloride-free active metal scrap with a chloride-containing spongy active metal and by irradiating the above with an electron beam. CONSTITUTION:The chloride-free metal scrap 2 and the chloride-containing spongy active metal 1 are placed in a water-cooled hearth 3, which is irradiated with an electron beam 4 by means of an electron gun 4 from the direction of an arrow.
