[Also in Division FI] A fluid bearing has, in at least one of its members, at least one hydrostatic balancing means comprising a hydrostatic balancing recess opening into the surface of that member and a sole restricting connection to the recess, the recess during rotation being substantially continuously closed by the surface of the other member, apart from clearance between the members; and has an intermittent supply of pressurized fluid delivered to the restricting connection during rotation. In an embodiment, a rotary cylinder block 1 having a bore 4 is mounted on a valve-plate 2 having a spigot 3 secured thereto which is received by the bore 4. The block 1 has a number of equi-spaced cylinders 7 therein, each cylinder 7 having a piston 8 with a bore 9 for receiving a connecting-rod 11 therein. The connecting-rod 11 is retained in the piston 8 by a circlip 13; engages a spherical surface 12 of the piston; and has a ball-shaped end 14 located within a pressure-pad 15, a number of which are equi-spaced around a swash-plate 16 which is carried by an integral shaft 17 mounted in bearings 19, 21 in a housing 18. A wear plate 22 is located in the housing 18 and engages the swash-plate 16, lubricant being supplied to the engaging faces through passages 24 in the connecting-rods 11. Arms 25 are secured to the valve-plate 2 and have trunnions 26 which are received by lugs 27 of the housing 18 so that the block 1, plate 2 and arms 25 form a tilting-head which tilts relatively to the swashplate 16. Rotation of the shaft 17 causes the swash-plate 16 and the connecting-rods 11 to rotate the block 1 and tilting of the head causes reciprocation of the pistons 8. Pumping is effected by providing each cylinder 7 with a port 28 which co-operates with fixed ports 29, 31 one being for delivery and the other being for suction. Balancing recesses 32-35, provided in a surface 5 of the valve-plate 2, are supplied by hydraulic pressure through grooves 36, 37 connected to feed ports 38, 39 by a dimple 41 in the block 1 so as to provide intermittent pressure to the recesses when the block 1 rotates. |
