PURPOSE:To polymerize by ring opening safely and easily the title compound which is a resin material which shows non-shrinking property upon ring-opening polymerization, by ring-opening a specified spiro ortho ester compound in the presence of an acid halide and a quat. phosphonium salt. CONSTITUTION:A spiro ortho ester compound (A) having a spiro ortho ester group of formula I [wherein R1 is a 3 C or higher (substituted) alkylene], e.g., formula II, is polymerized by ring opening in the presence of an acid halide (B) (e.g., benzoyl chloride) in an amount to provide 0.5-2 equivalent, per equivalent of the spiro ortho ester groups of component A, of haloformyl groups and a quat. phosphonium salt (C) (e.g., tetraphenylphosphonium bromide) in an amount of 0.001-10 equivalent %, based on the spiro ortho ester groups of component A or the haloformyl groups of component B and, optionally, a compound which can react with component A or component B to form a ring-opening adduct (e.g., lactone) and a filler for composite material (e.g., PE) at room temperature to 120 deg.C for several min to several hr.
