<p>Clean finishless textile articles, e.g. woven or knitted fabrics, yarn or roving, formed from synthetic polycarbonamides or polymers containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile in polymeric form are impregnated with an acidic aqueous solution containing as a solute a zirconium salt to render them resistant to soiling. The impregnating solution may be maintained at a pH value from 1.9 to less than 7 and at a temperature of 100 DEG -212 DEG F and the article may be maintained in contact with the solution for 10-90 minutes. The solution may contain the zirconium salt which may be zirconium acetate, zirconium oxychloride, zirconium sulphate, zirconium acetyl acetonate, potassium zirconyl carbonate, zirconium chloride, zirconium fluoride, zirconium nitrate, ammonium zirconyl carbonate, sodium zirconium sulphate or ammonium tricarbonate zirconate, in an amount equivalent to 0.05-2% by weight of zirconium itself. The pH of the solution may be adjusted by the addition of sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, formic or acetic acid. The solution may also contain an organic or inorganic nitrogen containing base or salt thereof, e.g. ammonia, hydrazine, hydroxylamine, ammonium carbonate, ammonium carbamate, hydroxylamine sulphate, aniline, aniline hydrochloride, furfurylamine, ethylene diamine, 1,6-hexamethylenediamine, o-toluidine, morpholine, N-methyl furfurylamine, N-methyl tetrahydrofurfurylamine, piperazine, hexamethylene tetramine, pyridine, manoethanolamine, glycine, aminoacetic acid, paraaminobenzoic acid and guanidine. The solution may be applied by dipping, padding, spraying or roll application. The treatment may be combined with a dyeing process. Carpet materials may be treated.</p> |
