PURPOSE:To improve the recording density by changing the peak of a recording current in response to the recording frequency so as to optimize the recording characteristic. CONSTITUTION:A current select timing circuit 5 outputs a pulse having a width different depending whether the inverted interval of a recording data is equal to a data bit interval or longer than it synchronously with the timing of leading/ trailing of a recording data from a recording data circuit 3. The stepwise current whose amplitude is modulated in response to the pulse is generated from a recording current modulation circuit 6 and fed to a recording current source circuit 4. Thus, the amplitude of the recording current fed to the magnetic head 1 is changed in response to the recording data frequency, the optimum recording is applied and the recording density is improved.
