A method of cladding zirconium alloy with aluminium comprises stretching and forcing heated aluminium against the heated zirconium alloy. In an example, the stretching and forcing operations are effected by a ram 6 which is forced through an aluminium liner expanding the liner against a tube 1 of zirconium alloy. The outside of the liner is machined to remove contamination and the end of the liner made frusto-conical. The bore of the tube 1 is cleaned, polished and degreased. The ram 6 and liner are degreased and the bore of the liner and surface of the ram are coated with colloidal graphite. The tube, liner and ram are now heated to 950‹ F. in an electric furnace, after which the heated ram is secured to an hydraulic press and the cladding operation performed. Molten salt may be used as a lubricant. The head 9 of the ram 6 may be longer than the liner.</p> |
