PURPOSE:To obtain a polysulfone imide excellent in heat resistance and moldability and useful as a material for moldings used in the field of space and aerocraft, by dehydratively cyclizing a polyamide-carboxylic acid obtained by reacting a specified aromatic acid anhydride with an aromatic diamine into an imide. CONSTITUTION:A polyamide-carboxylic acid is obtained by reacting 0.9-1.1mol of an aromatic acid anhydride (A) of formula I (wherein Ar is phenylene, naphthylene or a group of formula II) with 1mol of an aromatic diamine (B) of formula III [wherein Ar<1> is a group of formula IV or V (wherein R is H or CH3, X is a bond, O, S, SO2 or the like) and, optionally, 10mol% or below, based on components A, molecular weight modifier (C) (e.g., monoamine compound) at 50 deg.C or below for 10min-20hr in a solvent (e.g., dimethylacetamide). The obtained acid is dehydratively cyclized into imide rings by heating at 150-400 deg.C for 1min-5hr to obtain a polysilfone imide comprising repeating units of formula VI and having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.1-10.0dl/g.
