PURPOSE:To retain a workpiece at all times in parallel with emery cloth and improve machining accuracy in the polishing of the workpiece by connecting a workpiece retaining head for pressing the workpiece against the emery cloth of a surface plate, to a support shaft via a rotation transfer means free for inclining motion. CONSTITUTION:For polishing a workpiece 20, the carriage chuck of a workpiece transfer device chucks the workpiece 20 and feed the workpiece 20 to a polishing head 13. Then, the polishing head 13 is lowered by a cylinder and the workpiece 20 is pressed for contact with the emery cloth 4 of a surface plate 3. Thereafter, the surface plate 3 is turned and the polishing head 13 is as well turned for polishing the workpiece 20. In this case, when a wave has occurred on the surface plate 3, the polishing head 13 lists and follows unit about the shafts 15 and 16 of a universal joint 12 correspondingly. Therefore, the workpiece 20 is always kept in parallel with the emery cloth 4 and an error in parallelism can be kept under 1-2mum. |
