The essential problem in any fixed bed gasifier operating on the counter-current principle is condensate-rich gas formation resulting in cooling in the gasification material. However, fixed bed gasifiers operating on the co-current principle (and known as wood gas generators) do not guarantee condensate-free gases. The invention now provides, effectively in a three-chamber system 36, 40, 42, the preconditions for continuously heating the process gases taken off from the gasification chamber 11 of the reactor 1, and for converting these, by thermal cracking of the condensates, into non-condensable gases, and complete combustion of the latter to give odourless flue gases. This results in advantageous process linking of gas generation with the boiler 44 of a heating installation 2 for generating heating heat and/or process heat. <IMAGE>
