The compound of general formula (I): <IMAGE> which is prepared by Friedel and Crafts acylation of 4-fluorophenol or of one of its ethers, by means of 3-chloropropionyl chloride or else by a Fries rearrangement reaction of 4-fluorophenyl 3-chloropropionate. Application to the preparation of 6-fluoro-4-chromanone of general formula (II): <IMAGE> by ring closure of 2-(3-chloropropionyl)-4-fluorophenol at room temperature or merely by heating.
