PURPOSE:To provide the titled phosphor having a fluorescent screen exhibiting high brightness and low shadow brightness, by plating the surface of a phosphor matrix with cobalt, followed by calcination, thereby forming a CoO-contg. layer on the surface thereof. CONSTITUTION:The surface of 100pts.wt. phosphor matrix (e.g., ZnS:Cu, Al phosphor) is re-treated with a soln. contg. at least one member selected from among Pd, Au, Ag, and Pt and then plated with 0.005-1.0pt.wt. cobalt by electroless plating followed by calcination in an oxidizing atmosphere at 500-900 deg.C to form a CoO-contg. layer on the surface of the phosphor matrix.
