An L-shaped operating lever swings on the edge wall of the sewing machine base plate, so that one leg gives a vertical swing movement with the needle shaft and the other leg has a horizontal movement. A plate with a transverse horizontal motion has one end connected to a leg of the lever, and its other end pivoted on the base plate away from the edge wall. A number of deformed slits in the plate take swing components through their roller bolts in sliding contact with the slits, and follow their contours. At least one needle-type thread guide takes a cross thread. The cross thread is conbined with the sewing thread to form an overcast stitch.
