PRODUCTION OF NITROBENZOIC ACID

PURPOSE:The reaction of 2-chloro-4-nitrobenzoic acid with 4-1-2C alkoxyaniline is carried out in an aqueous medium in the presence of a mixture of copper (0) and cupric salt as well as a neutralizer to produce the titled compound in high yield in a short time. CONSTITUTION:In an aqueous medium in the presence of a mixture consisting of copper (0) and copper (II) salt such as cupric nitrate or cupric sulfate as well as a neutralizer such as sodium carbonate, the reaction of 2-chloro-4- nitrobenzoic acid with a 4-1-2C alkoxyaniline is effected to give 2-(4'-1-2C alkoxyaniline)-4-nitrobenzoic acid. The use of the copper (0) and copper (II) salt enables the reaction time to be shortened less than half and the by-products to be reduced. The ratio of the copper (0) to the copper (II) is 1mol/(0.3-2.0 equivalent moles).
