PURPOSE:To separate seawater into a liq. permeated through a membrane and having a low content of polyvalent inorg. ions and the residual liq. contg. concd. inorg. ions by supplying seawater under pressure into a dialyzer furnished with a reverse osmosis membrane having a low exclusion rate. CONSTITUTION:Seawater is supplied into the dialyzer furnished with a reverse osmosis membrane having <=50% exclusion rate for brine having 1-3g/dl sodium chloride concn. The seawater is separated into the liq. permeated through the membrane and having a low content of inorg. ions (e.g., Mg<2+>, Ca<2+>, and Sr<2+>) and the residual liq. (concd. liq.) contg. concd. polyvalent inorg. ions. Consequently, since the seawater having a low content of polyvalent ions can be obtained at a low cost, the problems such as the generation of scales in the concentration of sodium chloride or in the electrolysis of brine can be reduced. Furthermore, trace metals can be effectively extracted from the seawater contg. concd. polyvalent ions.
