In order to increase the high-voltage strength of a metal-halide high-pressure discharge lamp (5), the external power supply leads (6), which are passed out of the pinch (10), are at a greater distance than the internal power supply leads (8). For this purpose, the lower part (which forms the pinch (10) in subsequent operations) of a circular-cylindrical tube (1) consisting of quartz glass is expanded by inserting and subsequently spreading two expansion mandrels, which run parallel to one another, as a result of which this region assumes an oval cross-sectional form with a cylindrical shape. The production of the lamp then continues in a conventional manner.
