In particular for renovating an old chimney, the invention proposes a prefabricated pipe element (1) which has already been heat-insulated and is introduced into the shaft of an existing chimney outer casing (14) from above, as a result of which, by positioning a plurality of pipe elements (1) one on top of the other, an inner pipe run (15) is obtained. The pipe element (1) comprises a tubular shaped part which is stabilised by a binder and consists of mineral fibres, preferably basalt wool, and the inner surface of which has a coating which is resistant to corrosive flue gases and constitutes the smoke pipe. The shaped part and the coating form a single-piece unit, with the result that separate smoke pipes, e.g. consisting of chamotte, and separate insulating layers fitted thereon are no longer necessary. <IMAGE>
