In a device for selection from a stack of record cards in which an edge-punched code represents a number by the removal of lugs associated with groups of coding points 14-16 in a saddle attached to each card, two L-shaped rails 22, movable in slots 21 of each saddle 12, are connected by transverse bars 24 having slots 25, 26, 28 corresponding to the groups of coding points 14-16 and containing movable rollers 29-31 with rigidly held selector plates 32-34 that extend across the whole stack. A spring 18 is held in a slot 19 in the saddle of each card and engages a U-shaped rail 20. To select a particular card or cards, the rollers are moved in the slots and are pivoted so that their plates engage the appropriate lugs. Movement to the right by one digital period of the L-shaped rails carries non-selected cards against the restraining force of the springs 18, the selected cards being held because the lugs representing the appropriate digits of the number are missing in these cards and the plates therefore encounter no resistance. Members 35, 36 then move vertically to push the selected cards down guide walls 39, 40 to the floor of the container. A hook 45 carried on a conveyer belt 46 engages in a slit 49 to carry each selected card to its destination, which may be a reading station. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), selection of the required cards is by slides (62) after which the U-shaped rail 20 is pushed to the left thereby tightening all the springs 18. Only the springs of the selected cards are not compressed and the cards move away from a central L-shaped rail 22 where they can be pushed downwards by the sliding members 35, 36. In another modification (Fig. 8, not shown), the retaining member consists of an arm (66) moulded to the saddle 12 that bears against a star-shaped wheel such that rotation of the wheel moves the selected cards to a position where they can be separated as in the previous embodiments. In yet another modification (Fig. 9, not shown), the retention is by means of a permanent magnet (74) that is in contact with a polepiece (76) attached to each card. After selection the unwanted cards are detached and moved to the right. It is stated that, because the polepieces short-circuit the permanent magnet, the effect of the magnetic field on any magnetic recordings carried by the cards is eliminated or reduced. |
