The invention relates to a cooling fan (1) for an internal combustion engine, especially a diesel internal combustion engine. The cooling fan has a controlled hydraulic clutch (2), the primary part (5) of which is driven by the internal combustion engine and the secondary part (6) of which is connected to the impeller (3) of the cooling fan (1). The hydraulic supply to the coupling (2) is controlled by a control circuit for adjustment of the fan speed as a function of operating parameters (23). Since hydraulic couplings are not completely drained, a drive torque is always imparted to the secondary part, so that the fan impeller (3) always rotates at a minimum speed. In order to obtain a zero fan speed, it is proposed according to the invention that the secondary part be connectable by way of a brake (36), releasable as a function of its speed, to a rotationally fixed housing part (39) of the cooling fan housing (20, 31) (fig. 1). <IMAGE>
