<p>Locating at the intersection of two superimposed perpendicular bars (12, 13) the spacer is used to position reinforcing bars in a structural concreter member, fixing the two bars in the specified relationship and maintaining their cover. A hub (11) of two connected 'U' shaped pieces (16, 17) grips the bars, one or ideally two legs (14, 15) cantilevering from the hub to maintain cover. The legs project in opposite directions, and a bridge (21) connects two arms of the 'U' pieces to maintain them in a aligned parallel interspaced relationship. A compressive axial force applied to either leg effects an elastic contraction of a corresponding 'U' piece, the latter having respectively smooth (16a) and stiffened (20) out to provide a grooved table (22) aligning one of the bars.</p> |
