A process for expressing a protein product in Aspergillus oryzae is described. The process comprises transforming Aspergillus oryzae with a vector system which contains DNA sequences which encode functions which facilitate gene expression, a suitable marker for selecting transformants, and a DNA sequence which encodes the desired product. The process makes it possible to produce many different polypeptides and proteins industrially in A. oryzae. Examples of these products are chymosin and prochymosin and other milk-coagulating enzymes, proteases, lipases and amylases. In addition an efficient promoter for expressing a protein in Aspergillus is also described. A preferred promoter is the TAKA-amylase promoter, or functional parts thereof.
