In an electrophotographic recording element, consisting of a conductive carrier, a barrier layer arranged thereon, on which a photoconductor made of amorphous silicon with incorporated hydrogen is applied, a cover layer comprising silicon and carbon being provided on the photoconductor, a carrier (1) made of aluminium is used, on which a barrier layer (2) having a thickness of from 0.1 to 0.3 mu m is provided, consisting of an aluminium oxide layer generated by activation, i.e. by anodic oxidation of the aluminium. This results in good adhesion of the photoconductor, enhanced, especially positive, chargeability and a reduced dark-discharge rate. The recording element moreover has a high photosensitivity and upon exposure can be discharged very rapidly and virtually completely. The invention further relates to a process and the use of such a recording element. <IMAGE>
