In the zero calibration of roll-gap measuring devices, there is often the need to retain the zero reference value of the instrument precisely even when the upper and lower roll closed for the purpose of calibration do not come away from one another with their faces exactly parallel when opening. On a two-part measuring device with a calibrating appliance, this is achieved by virtue of the fact that one part (7) of the measuring device contains a calibrating spindle (14, 15) which can be adjusted relative to the displacement sensor (8, 9) built into the other part (6) of the measuring device. Built into the other part (6) of the measuring device in addition to the displacement sensor is a stop (12) which can be adjusted in the direction of the measurement travel. For the purpose of zero calibration, the stop is extended into a fixed end position as a support for the calibrating spindle (14, 15) and, for the purpose of subsequent release of the calibrating spindle, is retracted in the opposite direction. <IMAGE>
