Process for making liquid products from coal

The process for making liquid products from coal comprises the hydrogenation of the coal in the presence of a paste former in a hydrogen atmosphere at an elevated temperature, elevated pressure and short contact time. The hydrogenation is continued up to the instant of a sudden reduction in the conversion rate of the organic mass of the coal and is thus restricted to the conversion of its readily liquefying, hydrogen-rich part, after which the process is terminated. The process can be carried out in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst.
