An illuminating device for space-saving and uniform illumination of a surface, preferably an original holder in copiers or reproduction units, is constructed in such a way that a) the lamps are formed by bulb lamps (3) whose axes (4) enclose an acute angle with the surface (1) and are approximately at right angles to the theoretical line of intersection of the two reflector surfaces (5, 6), b) the mounts (7) for the lamps (3), and thus the lamp cap (3a) are arranged outside the reflectors (5, 6) behind the theoretical line of intersection of the two reflector surfaces (5, 6), c) the reflector surfaces (6) which are separated less in terms of height from the surface (1) are of shorter cross-section, d) the reflector surfaces (5, 6) are formed with a cross-section such that each of the marginal rays (10a to 10d) emanating from a lamp filament (3c) and extending to an inner or outer edge of each reflector surface (5, 6) in the plane of the lamp filament (3c) is reflected onto another of the sides (1a) of the surface (1) which are parallel to the longitudinal sides of the reflector. <IMAGE>
