<p>A checkout control system for processing purchased merchandise items (52) includes a checkout counter (40) in which is located a scanning assembly (30) for scanning a coded label (50) on the purchased item (52) to produce data signals identifying the item purchased, a display member (68) on the counter (40) for displaying the price of the merchandise item purchased, an indicator light (70) and a tone generator (74, 92) located in the display member (68), a remote processor (28) for obtaining the price of the merchandise item scanned from a price look-up table (96), and a data terminal device (24) for printing the prices of the items. Processing means located in the scanning assembly (30) and the display member (68) cycles the operation of the tone generator (74, 92) when the price of the item scanned is not found in the table (96) and cycles the operation of the indicator light (70) whenever a malfunction occurs in the operation of the terminal. In both cases, the operation of the scanning means is disabled.</p> |
