To increase the sensitivity and to reduce the elaboration of measurement of the transport of fluorescent substances through biological membranes in single cells, the cell is continuously irradiated with light of an intensity sufficient for photolysis and, at the same time, the change in fluorescence during the penetration in of fresh chromophores is measured. A computer determines inter alia the transport coefficient kt from the plot of the decrease in fluorescence with time.
