PURPOSE:To read the picture information of the large area especially at a high speed by building in the bidirectional shift register which can select the reading advancing direction to one direction. CONSTITUTION:By changing at least one mask of the patterning of the wiring of an Al or polysilicon, the reading advancing direction of the shift register can be made reverse easily. By using a pair of the solid-state image pickup devices having the shift register whose reading advancing direction comes to be reverse, the device is serially connected facing each other so that the center of the photodetecting element can be on the straight line. In such a way,the optical output signal of the photodetecting element can be successively read in the same direction.
