PURPOSE:To obtain a high quality recording picture by sampling a part of picture data, obtaining the luminance distribution, in accordance with the result, executing gradation assignment of density to the luminance of the picture data, and recording the result. CONSTITUTION:A color analog video signal is inputted, a correcting control circuit 8 executes the gradation correction to picture data from an interface part 2 and the correcting data are stored to a picture memory 5. A CPU 10 samples the picture data of the quantity equivalent to the picture data of the scanning line within 10% of all scanning lines by one scanning line or above out of the picture data from the interface part 2, obtains the luminance distribution, executes the gradation assignment of the fine density to the luminance scope having many frequencies, executes the gradation assignment of the rough density to the luminance scope having a small number of frequencies and prepares the gradation correcting table. A table RAM 11 stores the gradation correcting table and the gradation correction is executed for the picture data from the interface part 2 in accordance with the gradation correcting table.
