PURPOSE:To improve an processing efficiency by calculating the recognition rate of information, comparing the recognition rate with a previously set recognition rate alarm area and generating an alarm signal in accordance with a comparing signal. CONSTITUTION:A slip to be read is set in a stocker 10 and a reading is started and then, a character on the slip is read by a reading head 18 and the pattern is processed in a quantizing section 40, a character extracting section 41 and recognized in a recognizing section 42. The recognition result is outputted to a recognition calculating section 44, the recognition rate of a slip unit and the recognition rate of a character unit are calculated. When the recognition rate is lowered and an alarm signal is generated from a comparing section 46, in the case of the document unit, a lamp 22 is flashed, a buzzer 33 is ringed to inform the deterioration of the recognition rate to the operator. Thereby, the deterioration of the recognition rate can be immediately grasped and a rapid treatment can be made.
