An emulsifying agent for emulsion polymerisation, comprising at least one compound selected from the group consisting of (a) betaine esters of polyoxyalkylene alkyl ethers, (b) betaine esters of polyoxyalkylene alkylphenyl ethers, (c) betaine esters of polyoxyalkylene dialkylphenyl ethers, (d) betaine esters of polyoxyalkylene phenyl ethers having two or more benzene rings and (e) betaine esters of polyoxyalkylene polyol ethers. This emulsifying agent is suitable for use for the emulsion polymerisation of polymer emulsions which can form a film having excellent water resistance, transparency and smoothness.
