L-N-n-propyl pipecolic acid 2,6-xylidide for use as a local anaesthetic with low toxicity, is made by (a) resolving pipecolic acid to isolate the L-stereo-isomer; (b) chlorinating to obtain the acid chloride of formula (I); (c) reacting this with 2,6-xylidene to obtain the xylidide of formula (II); and (d) propylating with a propyl halide e.g. propyl bromide.
