The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of 3-methyl-1,3,5-triazinetriones of the formula (I) <IMAGE> in which R represents optionally substituted aryl, which comprises heating 4-methoxy-1,3,5-triazinediones of the formula (II) <IMAGE> in which R has the abovementioned meaning, at temperatures between 150 DEG C and 250 DEG C, if appropriate in the presence of diluents, and to novel intermediates for carrying out this process, and to a process for their preparation.
