PURPOSE:To obtain a polyether ketone prepared by using a lowly corrosive condensing agent, by the self-condensation of phenoxybenzoic acid by using a mixture of phosphorus pentoxide and an organic sulfonic acid. CONSTITUTION:In producing polyetherketone by the self-condensation of phenoxybenzoic acid, a mixture of phosphorus pentoxide and an organic sulfonic acid is used as a condensing agent. The phenoxybenzoic acid used as a starting material is represented by formula I and its examples include m-phenoxybenzoic acid and p-phenoxybenzoic acid. The condensing agent is a mixture of phosphorus pentoxide and an organic sulfonic acid of the formula: RSO3H (wherein R is a 1-5 C alkyl) and the mixing ratio (P2O5:RSO3H) is 1:1-1:30 by weight. The reaction conditions include a reaction temperature of 60-150 deg.C and a reaction time of 2-48hr. According to this process, a polyether ketone having a basic skeleton comprising units of formula II can be obtained.
