Strontium oxide is prepared by thermal decomposition of commercial strontium peroxide. Advantageously, the decomposition is carried out in a rotary kiln at a temperature of at least 600 DEG C. The strontium oxide obtained is granular; it can be comminuted by grinding to give a powder having an average particle diameter of from 0.001 to 0.05 mm. The strontium oxide is suitable as an additive for curing oxidatively curable polymers; to this end it is employed, in particular, in the form of a high-strength paste.
