PURPOSE:To attain a recording picture having a halftone with much fidelity to original picture information by selecting the density expression of the noted recording dot so that the apparent density gradation of the entire dot pattern is closest to the correction density of the noted region of the picture information. CONSTITUTION:For example, the density of all picture elements included in the noted region of the picture information is averaged to obtain a prescribed converted density. A dither value is added to the converting density. Then the apparent density gradation of the noted region in the recording picture is obtained from the dot pattern consisting of all the recording dots and the noticed recorded dot including in the noted region of the recording picture as to each density expression selected for the noted recording dot and the density expression of the noted recording dot is selected so that the difference between the said density and the corrected density is minimized. Thus, the recording picture having a halftone with much fidelity to the picture information as a whole is obtained.
