PURPOSE:To slide rotary magnetic heads on a magnetic tape more stably by forming recessed parts in positions between individual pairs of rotary magnetic heads on the outside peripheral surface of a rotary drum. CONSTITUTION:Grooves 22 are formed throughout in the same level as rotary magnetic heads 21, 22, 31, and 32 in positions between rotary magnetic heads 21 and 22 and rotary magnetic heads 31 and 32 on the outside peripheral surface of a rotary drum 14. An air film 23 is formed on all of the outside peripheral surface of the drum 14 by high-speed rotation of the drum 14. Since recessed parts 23a are formed in positions of grooves 22, parts of the surface of the magnetic tape 5 corresponding to recessed parts 23a are recessed along the outside peripheral surface of the film 23. That is, the part between heads 21 and 31 is formed to a recessed part 5a and approaches the outside peripheral surface of the drum 14, and upper and lower parts of the recessed part 5a are drawn to approach the outside peripheral surface of the drum 14, and the tape is brought into contact with heads 21 and 31 surely. The same phenomenon occurs in the part scanned with heads 22 and 32, and heads 21, 22, 31, and 32 are slided on the magnetic tape 5 stably to transmit and receive signals surely.
