PURPOSE:To accurately urge a grinding wheel against a work in the direction of normal to the free curved surface of the work by detecting the direction of the grinding wheel with a sensor unit to correct the direction of urging the grinding wheel. CONSTITUTION:While a work 4 is secured fixedly to a table, the surface of the work 4 is scanned by a set of 4 or 3 sensor 3 which move along the surface of the work 4 through the upper surface plate 12 of a rotary grinding wheel 5 with the scanning width and speed being automatically controlled to measure the direction of the normal erected on the curved surface of the work 4. The normal direction data of the free curved surface of the work are sequentially read out to be used as the correction signal of grinding wheel 5 urging direction so that the work is polished and finished while the polishing position is controlled.
