PURPOSE:To obtain an optical converter provided with high light utilizing efficiency for incident light having a polarization characteristic by forming a grating of the boundary face between the 1st material having optical isotropy and the 2nd material which permits the control of the two states; optical anisotropy and optical isotropy. CONSTITUTION:The optical state variable material 1 exhibits the optical anisotropy in a static state and the optical axis thereof faces the groove direction of the grating. Polarization components 6 and 6' intersecting orthogonally with each other of the incident light 5 sense the grating consisting of refractive indices no and ng, ne and ng. The material changes to the isotropic material and the polarization components sense the grating consisting of the refractive indices ni and ng when heat is exerted to the material 1 by a transparent heater 3 so as to be heated up to the critical temp. or above. Zero order transmitted and diffracted light 8 is not generated in the static state if prescribed relations are set among the refractive indices ne, no, ni of the material 1, the refractive index ng of the material 2 and the wavelength lambdao of the incident light. The incident light 5 is fully transmitted through the grating and exits therefrom as zero order transmitted and diffracted light 8 when the state of the material 1 is changed to the optical isotropy by the heater 3.
