PURPOSE:To purify the titled crude substance by a common separating means such as distillation, etc., in high purity, by hydrogenating the titled crude sub stance containing an impurity such as dihydrofuran, etc., which is separated by distillation with difficulty, in the presence of a catalyst, so that the impurity is converted into a compound which is separated with ease. CONSTITUTION:Crude tetrahydrofuran (THF) containing dihydrofuran and/or butylaldehyde which is separated by distillation from THF with difficulty as an impurity is hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, espe cially a noble metal catalyst, the impurity is converted into THF or n-butanol which is easily separable from THF, the crude THF is distilled, to give easily THF which has high product value useful as a raw material for resins, fibers, etc., and has >=99.9% purity by a common separating means while suppressing loss of THF. Before the reaction is performed, the crude THF is treated with water and/or acetic acid in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin, so that dihydrofuran is converted into hydroxytetrahydrofuran, etc., and it may be preseparated by distillation.
