PURPOSE:To speed up processing by correcting only specific picture elements by emphasizing intentional information of hills and vales according to density histograms relative to concentration threshold values and concentration of surroundings of picture elements to be subjected to correction. CONSTITUTION:The threshold value selector 33, seeks the threshold value at the point of receiving the end of data and stores the value in the register 34. The controller 47 upon receipt of signal of completion of processing from the threshold selector 33, forces the reading section 32 to repeatedly read the data consecutively. The controller 47 makes the comparator 36 compare the contents of the register 34 and the register 35 and upon receipt of signal that the contents of 34 is larger, compels the writing section 45 to write into the memory 46 the contents of register 35, and in case of reverse situation, directs the reading section 32 to store in the registers 37, 38 the two picture elements before and after the perceived picture element actually scanned. The controller 47 commands the table 39 to obtain the density compensation value. In this way, correction density data value corresponding to the various picture element density data value stored in the memory 31 can be stored.
