PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium which has good crystal orientability, i.e., magnetic characteristic, increases the number of CSS and has high reliability by providing a nonmagnetic underlying layer which is formed of any one kind among Cr, Au, Cu, Rh, Sn and Zn to a specific thickness between a nonmagnetic hardened layer and magnetic medium layer. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium is constituted of an aluminum alloy substrate 1 which is a nonmagnetic substrate, the nonmagnetic hardened layer 2, the nonmagnetic Cr underlying layer 3 and the magnetic medium layer 4. The adverse influence of the layer 2 can be prevented and the crystal orientability of the layer 4 can be improved by forming the nonmagnetic underlying layer 3 of any one kind among Cr, Au, Cu, Rh, Sn and Zn to 50-2,400Angstrom thickness. The characteristics of the layer 2, i.e., good hardness and surface accuracy are thus maintained without being deteriorated. The crystal orientability and the value of S* are higher as the film thickness of Cr exceeds 50Angstrom . On the other hand, the decreased number of CSS is observed if the film thickness of Cr exceeds 2,400Angstrom and attains >=3,000Angstrom .
