An electronic multi-purpose indicator with a housing which consists of an insulating material. On the housing, a measuring sensor consisting of a conductive material is mounted. On the housing, actuating and display elements are arranged. The housing exhibits a hollow space for accommodating the power source and control circuit. The space requirement for the control circuit can be very considerably reduced by special measures so that the housing can be made smaller to such an extent that it can be constructed as a holding handle. The great reduction in space requirement is achieved by the fact that a flexible membrane carrying conductor tracks and consisting of an insulating material is provided inside the hollow space, on which membrane at least one integrated circuit arrangement (chip) and a number of discrete components electrically connected to this chip are provided. On the membrane, the actuating elements for the selection of the desired operating mode and the display elements are mounted. Actuating and display elements protrude into openings in the housing and can be operated and are visible from the outside.
